Rotation #3 Summarizer Kresten Due

This week we were reading 99/230 pages Sherman Alexie's, "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian" and I was the summarizer. This means that I had to make a summary of all the key events that happened in the 99 pages that we read. The book begin with a general exposition where we learn of the characters. The most important/main character Arnold Spirit (Nickname : Junior) is said to have been born with too much cerebral fluid giving him a big head and making him prone to seizures. We also learn that he has large feet and is skinny so he relates himself to a walking L. Supposedly he also gets bullied by others. We also learn of his parents who are both alcoholics and are not exactly the richest of people. Then we learn of Junior's best friend Rowdy who apparently likes to pick on people or bully them which is ironic considering Rowdy is a bully Hereafter we are given an example of is Junior's worst problem which is, "Not being poor" but instead being the inability to help people or things due to poverty. The example of this is that Junior had a dog called Oscar who one day became sick. Since they were poor they couldn't take him to the vet, so to stop his suffering the dad took out Oscar (With junior at his side) and shot Oscar. The other part which is said to be terrible is that you feel like you deserve to be poor. Nevertheless Rowdy and Junior go to a celebration. There Junior gets picked on by some adult triplets. He is injured but for revenge he and Rowdy waited for some time and when the Adult triplets slept they cut their braids and hair which took them 5 years to grow. Thereafter Junior goes to high school in the reservation. Junior then receives a geometry book which is his mothers meaning they would be learning geometry from about more than 20 years ago. Then due to frustration he accidentally threw the book at his teacher and was suspended for a week. During his suspension Junior was confronted by the exact same teacher and told to leave the reservation otherwise he would lose all his hope. Therefore junior started to go to Reardan the other closest high school to their Indian reservation. He then meets Penelope who he falls in love with, and than become friends with a very smart child kid called Gordy.

To simplify:

  1. We are given a general description or exposition which tells us a lot about the characters of the story and gives us a better understanding of the book.
  2. Rowdy and Junior go to an Native American festival where junior is beaten up and Rowdy and him get revenge by cutting of his assailants' hair
  3. Junior gets frustrated due to his mother's name in his geometry book and ends up throwing his book at his teacher
  4. Junior is confronted by the teacher and is told to leave the reservation as it made you lose hope and people never end up leaving
  5. He applies to another high school nearby called Reardan where he meets both Penelope and Gordy and ends up being very intelligent in comparison to the rest of people. He is supposedly smarter than 99% of the school according to the book.
