2nd Rotation - Kresten Due - Discussion Director

This rotation we finished the book, "The Chocolate War" by Robert Cormier by reading the 263 pages of the book. This rotation I was the Discussion Director meaning I had to create questions based on the book and encourage discussion concerning those questions. This week there were various questions I posed mainly focused on characters and the book itself.

*Note these are not exact dialogues but summaries of points made by people*

Question #1:What are your feelings concerning Archie:

General Answer: He is a very rude and selfish person, and only cares for himself however at the same time he is very smart.

Kresten: I find him very interesting. I like his common application of psychology, how he is always composed. I also admire his intelligence and his knowledge of how humans react.

Elzbieta: He is very rude and selfish, and only cares for himself. However it is good how he prefers to hurt people mentally rather than physical, nonetheless he causes more pain than expected.

Luka: In general he is very selfish and rude.

Rodion: He is selfish, rude, and only cares for himself with no regard to other people.

Eplanaiton: Archie is the essential leader of the vigils who plays a large role in the story. He doesn't have goo grades but has a strong sense of people and uses that to his advantage whether it be to bait them or control them.

Question #2: What would you change about the book?

General Answer: There are far too many characters, and it needs more details. It is also very confusing

Kresten: I would decrease the amount of characters. For example Casper Tubs was introduced for part of a chapter and served no purpose. He contributed nothing and was redundant.

Elzbieta: There are far too many people and many of them are useless. It would be nice if a few were removed.

Luka: Less characters, and the book in general is lacking in many points which could be improved.

Rodion: It's too confusing and there are far too many characters. Also the book could have far more details

Explanation: Throughout the book there are many characters that come up and do absolutely nothing. For example the example of Casper Tubs represents this very well. For a fraction of a chapter Casper Tubs was introduced. He was described and then didn't come up ever again in the book.

Question #3: If you were to write an epilogue how would it go?

General Answer: Another internal conflict would occur with the characters.

Kresten: Jerry Renault, and The Goober would rejoin the football team and then I would do something similar to the outsiders were the last sentence would be the same as the first, leaving the ending open.

Elzbieta: There would be a civil war inside the Vigils, and Emila Janza would gain revenge on Archie Costello, and Archie Costello would try to evict Brother Leon as he was a threat to Archie

Luka: It is a very odd ending and it is difficult to come up with an end however there might be a war between various possible individuals.

Rodion: It was a very sudden stop, and is difficult to continue however I think there would be an internal war, and various things might change due to various accidents or similar things.

Explanation: In the book the normal completely changes as one student says no to a chocolate sale. This appears to make people realize hoe simple it is to say no which seems to change everyone. Nothing is normal and people appear to be resisting various things such as the school society the Vigils and the Chocolate sale.

Question #4: What would you do if you were in Trinity High school?

General Answer: We would try to be as incognito as possible and not be noticed by people.

Kresten: I would try to be incognito and do everything I was told to. In relation to the book, I dare not disturb the universe.

Elzbieta: I would try to be a ghost, be invisible, and be unpopular. I would hide from society and try to avoid the vigils however I wouldn't mind doing an assignment.

Luka: I would try to be incognito and sot of hide away from people

Rodion: I wouldn't want to be seen. Once again I would want to be incognito, or sort of invisible.

Explanation: At trinity there is a huge internal conflict as Jerry Renault refuses to sell chocolates and denies the vigils (The unofficial kings of the school) and everything appears to be going badly.

Question #5: Who was your favorite character while reading the book?

General Answer: The Majority picked Jerry Renault.

Kresten: My favorite character was Archie Costello as h is shown as a genius and has a very strong control of psychology, and is always composed. Two things which I envy. Also he has a very interesting philosophical concept of an invisible house which I don't fully understand but I find interesting.

Elzbieta: The Goober as he helps out the main character with his experience and acts how I would act in that situation.

Luka: I have mixed feelings however I like Jerry Renault the most. It is really only because there are no real better characters.

Rodion: I like Jerry Renault mainly because he shows defiance and is his own entity. People can't tell him so much what to do.

Explanation: N/A
