Rodion Haataja
summarizer
The absolutely true diary of a part time Indian
 100 Pg's. read
This job i was a summarizer and i summarized the last 100 pages i read. this is the summary i wrote about the book i a currently reading.
Summary
In the first 80 pages of the book, Junior was transferred to a different school. When he arrived there he had some trouble fitting in. Once he stood up to the biggest bully in the school he gained some respect and became friends with him. However, there is one girl that Junior is in love with and her name is Penelope. At the beginning Penelope did not like Junior as much as she does now. In these last pages I read, Junior had a connection with Penelope and they became good friends. While they were friends they got to know each other better and they began expanding their feelings for each other. The school hosted a dance that Junior went to with Penelope; the two hit it of pretty well and once the dance was over the bully was hosting a pancake party. Penelope wanted to go with Junior but Junior did not have enough money to pay for any pancakes. Junior decided to play along and go to the party. While they were there Junior was worried that his friends would find out that he is poor and so Junior asked the bully to lend him some money. Junior and Penelope ate like kings and once they arrived back at the school, where the parents were waiting except for Junior’s, Penelope asked Junior if he was poor. Junior did not want to lie and told her that he was indeed poor and so Penelope gave him a kiss on the cheek.

Travel Tracer (Rotation #4) Kresten Due "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian"

This rotation I was the Travel Tracer for "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian" by Sherman Alexie. That meant that I was meant to keep track of where important events occur in chronological order. We read this week from page number 99-197.

List of key events w/ location :

  1. The first event is that we learn Penelope (The main characters supposed, part girlfriend) is bulimic. This means she has an in-existent eating order or commonly known as binge eating. After a large meal due to a sudden urge of hunger a bulimic person will then be concerned about the amount of calories they consume and vomit to get rid of those calories.

Location: In a hallway outside of the bathrooms

    Page: 106
  2. The second event is a dance party. This party is special as it is the winter formal. Here Junior character is wearing his fathers old polyester, stereotypical disco suit which ends up being very entertaining. Here he is with Penelope and dances to every song and generally has a good time.

    Location: Reardan High-School Gym

    Page: 121
  3. The third event occurs directly after the dance where Roger (a supporting character) and some others have invited Penelope and Junior to go with them to a 24 hour pancake place. However what is significant is that when Roger drops off Junior at the school parking lot where he is supposedly going to be picked up by his father Penelope asks Junior whether he is poor. He doesn't lie and tells her that he is. Form here Roger brings him home.

    Location: School Parking Lot

    Page: 127
  4. The next event which occurs when Junior has joined the basketball team and his first game is against the reservation where he lived and his former high-school. When he arrives he has to go against his former best friend and to make things worse, he has to play in his former high-school's gym. Here he receives much negativity and is concussed by his former best friend.

    Location: The Wellipint High-School Gym

    Page: 145
  5. The fifth event is when we learn of the death of Junior's grandmother. His grandmother was called Grandmother Spirit. According to junior she was very tolerant and kind. However she was run over by a drunk driver which ended up killing her.

    Location:

    Description: Standard narration from  nowhere
Death: Coming back from a powwow at the Spokane Tribal Community Center

    Page: 157
  6. The last event is when there is a basketball rematch between Wellipint (Junior's former High-School) and Reardan (His current High-School). Here junior has a great yet terrible game. He has a terrible game in the sense that he only scores three points. However on the bright side he has a great game as he blocks a dunk and wins the game.

Discussion Director

Name: Elzbieta J.
Job: Discussion Director
Title: The absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian
Pages Read: 197/230

Questions:
1. What do you think about Junior's and Penelope's relationship?
Kresten:  No opinion, its very stereotypical. In real life, Penelope would ditch him when he said that his poor.
Luka: I think its nice she really likes him and that she cares for him
Rodion: I think it so cute, because Penelope is any racist unlike her father.
Elzbieta: I think their relationship represents what all relationship's are at their age, Penelope has a protective father, Junior is worried about whether he is able to offered the dance. They kiss, dance, and hang out. I dont think Penelope likes him the way Junior does, but I think as she enjoys being popular, she might just be using him. He is the out stand of the school, the one that doesn't belong, so what better way than to build a reputation than dating the guy? I found it fascinating how Junior could like a girl like Penelope (knowing that she is anorexic), and yet he is still madly in love with her.
2. So, far who is your favorite character and why?
Kresten: For me its definitely the coach, because he is portray in the most unrealistic fashion possible which in this case i find funny,
Luka: I cant say, its normally the main character. I like Junior, because he is the main character and we learn most about him
Rodion: Junior, because he had a relay confusing life and its very entertaining.
Elzbieta: My favorite character is Rowdy, because he doesn't care what others think of him. he does get mad and is violent, but that just all adds up to his intellect. I also like him as a character, because of how protective he was of Arnold at the beginning of the story.
3. How would you have reacted if your grandmother had died, and so many people would gather? Also, comment on how they laughed during the burial.
Kresten: I have mixed feelings for this because it depends which grandmother. One of my grandmother sis suffering as she approached the seventh state of dementia. This means that her life will be reduced to sitting in a chair and doing nothing. If she were to die, it might actually be good for her. However, I have another gramd mother who is very joyous and full of life in which case ot would be a shame for her to die.  AS for how they laughed in the funeral, i find it appropriate since I think that its what the grandmother had wanted.
Luka: That as quite mean in my opinion, still Im not sure how I would feel.
Rodion: It was so mean, I wanted to punch them.
Elzbieta: I think I would of drenched my sorrows in alcohol, following Arnold's fathers example. I think the laughing part of the ceremony just added up to the knowledge that we gain about the Indian society. I think that the way they let go of a person is very interesting.
4. How do you think the book might end, has anything been foreshadowed, if so what and how does it affect the book?
Kresten:I have no idea how the book will end, I feel as if theyr putting a basketball game into this while at the same time it doesn't seem like the book is oriented around basketball. One thing that I presume will happen is that Junior and Rowfdy will become friends.
Luka: I feel like this is one of the books in which you cant predict the ending. I honestly have no idea.
Rodion: I think it will ed with everybody dissing Junior because his poor and like later on in the book he might f]do something bad.
Elzbieta: I don't think they r has been any foreshadowing. I think the book might end with him accomplishing the year successfully, possibly breaking up with Penelope, and becoming friends with Rowdy once again.
5. What was your favorite part in the book?
Kresten: My fav part is during the dance. Its funny how Junior shows up in a disco suit and its entertaining.
Luka: Th scene when Junior and Penelope are trying to get to know each other, later on in the book
Rodion: My funniest part when they were at the panckae plae and the guy hands Junior 40 bucks.
Elzbieta: For me the funniest part in the book is when Gordy and Arnold are in the library and Gordy asks Arnold whether books give him a boner. And Arnold completely misunderstands the concept.

Literature circles- The absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian summariser

Literature circles- The absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian

Chapter 1 summary
At the beginning of the book  the main character talks about how he was born. He writes that when he was born he had too many fluids in his skull. The doctors had to let the water out of his skull or he would die. The parents agreed solemnly and at the age of 6 months he got operated.
The operation lead to some brain damage and improper growth. His feet were huge, he was short, and he had a really big head. His head was so big, in fact, that the bullies would turn his head and say “I am going to go over there”. They would often punch him in the eye. The main character even wrote that whenever they would punch him, he would re-enter the club called “Black-Eye-of-the- Month Club”.
But in addition to all the negative things, the main character also tells us one positive thing about himself which is that he likes to draw. He tells us that nothing can be better explained and understood than a picture.

Chapter 2 summary
In this chapter the main character mainly talks about how his whole family is poor and how they sometimes skip dinners. He makes an interesting (and sad) statement that when the family has chicken for dinner, he feels like as if god came to aid him.
He also talks about how his best friend, Oscar, is seriously sick. When he touches him, Oscar bursts out in pain. He asked his parents if there was any way to help his friend, but they just shook their heads solemnly. The boy's dad then decides to put an end to the poor kids suffering by shooting him. At first, the main character disagreed, but then saw the reasoning behind it. As he carried Oscar out of his house, he licked him in sign of friendship. He put him down and ran as fast as he could from there. As he started to shed his tears, he heard the sound of a gun ring in the air.

Chapter 3 summary
This chapter is about how the main character goes with his friend Rowdy to a festival called powwow. Rowdy is very impulsive. They watch dancers dancing like chickens and soon get bored. Rowdy goes to get some drinks but trips and falls on the floor. Angry like hell, he grabs a shovel and starts hitting ferociously a van. The main character runs away and soon finds himself bullied by three thirty year old men. Rowdy avenges him by cutting the eyebrows and hair of each one of them.
Rowdy's good side is that he likes comic books. The main character makes comic books for Rowdy and reads them with him.

Chapter 4 summary
This chapter is about how he goes to his first day of high school and goes to his algebra class. The algebra teacher is quite strange. He sometimes doesn’t come to school so someone has to run all the way to his house to remind him that school has started. The main character defines him as sleepy.
The teacher hands out algebra books to the students. The main character suddenly gets furious because these books were old. The book reminds him of his old mother, so he throws it in the teachers face.

Chapter 5 summary
The main character's misbehavior in algebra gets him suspended for a week. He sits on a chair and sees the teacher coming towards his house. The main character slowly walks towards him. The teacher sits down and starts telling him about his sister. He tells him that his sister wanted to be a writer. She wanted to write romance novels. At the end of the teacher’s speech, he tells the main character that he has to leave his home in search of hope.

Chapter 6 summary
In this really brief chapter the main character tells his parents that he wants to change schools. He wants to go to Reardan which is a rich school but which is reserved only for white people. The parents agree.

Chapter 7 summary
In this really brief chapter we finally discover the main character's name: Junior. Junior goes to Rowdy and tells him that he is going to another school. Rowdy's first thought is that Junior is kidding. When he notices his friend's serious face, he get's so angry that he punches Junior in the face and runs away.

Chapter 8 summary
In this chapter, Junior goes for the first time in the “white people” school. There Junior meats a beautiful girl called Penelope. Unfortunately, every child is avoiding him (including Penelope) because he is Indian.
When the homeroom teacher asks his name he sais that his name is Junior, and everybody starts to laugh like crazy. Junior couldn’t figure out why, “Junior” was a common name in his old school.
As the days went by people started to calling him names. Junior ignored them until someone took things too far, a boy said:
“You want to hear a joke?”
“Sure”. Junior said.
“Did you know that Indians are living proof that niggers fuck buffalo?”
Junior got so angry that he punched the guy in the face. The kid was stunned and as he slowly rose from the ground he said to Junior that he was an animal.

Chapter 9 summary
In this chapter Junior goes home, and tells his grandmother what happened that day. She said that the guy who was bullying Junior now respected him because Junior showed him that he is not afraid on anything.
Junior goes the next day to school, afraid that the guy was going to beat him up badly. But instead, the guy just said hi and walked away.

Chapter 10 summary
In this brief chapter Junior tells us how he loved a bronze girl named Dawn when he was twelve years old. Junior tells to Rowdy his secret. Rowdy said to Junior to forget her because she doesn’t give a shit about him. Junior at that point starts to cry.

Chapter 11 summary
This chapter starts with Junior being at science class. The teacher sais that petrified would exists but Junior sais that that is not true. The teacher gets furious and asks the smartest kid in class, Gordy, if what Junior was saying was true are not. Gordy obviously agrees with Junior.
When Junior came from school he saw her mother crying. He asked her what was wrong and she replied that Junior’s sister got married. Junior was shocked but didn’t say anything.
The next day, Junior asks Gordy if he wants to be his friend. Gordy said yes. Gordy then teaches Junior how to read and write. He also explains to Junior that books are a big mystery.

Chapter 12 summary
In this chpter Junior receives an email from her sister in which it says that she is in Montana. She rode a horse and had a honeymoon in a hotel. She also said that she ate fried bread which is better than their grandmothers.

Chapter 13 summary
In this chapter Junior is eating turkey with his family because it is thanksgiving. Later that day, he drew a picture of Rowdy and him. He missed him. So he went to Rowdy’s home to give him the picture. Rowdy’s dad opened the door and said that Rowdy wasn’t there. Junior gave the drawing to Rowdy’s father and said to give it to him when he returns. As Junior left the house, he turned around and saw Rowdy staring at him, his face full of sadness.

Rotation #3 Summarizer Kresten Due

This week we were reading 99/230 pages Sherman Alexie's, "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian" and I was the summarizer. This means that I had to make a summary of all the key events that happened in the 99 pages that we read. The book begin with a general exposition where we learn of the characters. The most important/main character Arnold Spirit (Nickname : Junior) is said to have been born with too much cerebral fluid giving him a big head and making him prone to seizures. We also learn that he has large feet and is skinny so he relates himself to a walking L. Supposedly he also gets bullied by others. We also learn of his parents who are both alcoholics and are not exactly the richest of people. Then we learn of Junior's best friend Rowdy who apparently likes to pick on people or bully them which is ironic considering Rowdy is a bully Hereafter we are given an example of is Junior's worst problem which is, "Not being poor" but instead being the inability to help people or things due to poverty. The example of this is that Junior had a dog called Oscar who one day became sick. Since they were poor they couldn't take him to the vet, so to stop his suffering the dad took out Oscar (With junior at his side) and shot Oscar. The other part which is said to be terrible is that you feel like you deserve to be poor. Nevertheless Rowdy and Junior go to a celebration. There Junior gets picked on by some adult triplets. He is injured but for revenge he and Rowdy waited for some time and when the Adult triplets slept they cut their braids and hair which took them 5 years to grow. Thereafter Junior goes to high school in the reservation. Junior then receives a geometry book which is his mothers meaning they would be learning geometry from about more than 20 years ago. Then due to frustration he accidentally threw the book at his teacher and was suspended for a week. During his suspension Junior was confronted by the exact same teacher and told to leave the reservation otherwise he would lose all his hope. Therefore junior started to go to Reardan the other closest high school to their Indian reservation. He then meets Penelope who he falls in love with, and than become friends with a very smart child kid called Gordy.

To simplify:

  1. We are given a general description or exposition which tells us a lot about the characters of the story and gives us a better understanding of the book.
  2. Rowdy and Junior go to an Native American festival where junior is beaten up and Rowdy and him get revenge by cutting of his assailants' hair
  3. Junior gets frustrated due to his mother's name in his geometry book and ends up throwing his book at his teacher
  4. Junior is confronted by the teacher and is told to leave the reservation as it made you lose hope and people never end up leaving
  5. He applies to another high school nearby called Reardan where he meets both Penelope and Gordy and ends up being very intelligent in comparison to the rest of people. He is supposedly smarter than 99% of the school according to the book.

Rotation three Bing illustrator

For the third rotation I was illustrator I drew Jerry, the main character boxing against Emil Janzaa who is a bully.

In my drawing (which is not present I'm sorry I couldn't upload it) Jerry is getting beaten up by Emil Janzaa who is a bully in a boxing match. After the match Jerry is brought to the hospital  because he is so badly hurt. I choose this part of the book because I like the action and it is something different from all those other story's that end with rainbow's and butterfly's. In my drawing (which you can't see like I already said) you see Emil hitting Jerry in the face and there is like a bunch of blood. Jerry sort of looks like he is falling over and he has a bit of a dis formed leg.

Chocolate War- illustrator rotation #3 by Luka Dragoljic

This image represents practically the whole story. The story couldn't be written without the chocolate box due to the fact that the whole story is about how Jerry doesn't want to sell the chocolate boxes and rebels against the Vigils.

Rotation #3/ Job Vocabulary Enricher

Vocabulary Enricher - Nick Nagy

My job this rotation was the Vocabulary Enricher and what i do is find words that i didn't understand or didn't know what they mean and write them down and then find the definition. I got four words this rotation out of five. Since i didn't want to have a small amount of words i took a word that i know but don't exactly understand. The word was obliterated. Another word that i know and understand is Skirmishing meaning to practice in a a large group to get ready for a competition of some sort.

The two other words were,

Fastidious- Very attentive and concerned
Monstrous- Having a appearance of a monster

Literary Luminary

Name: Elzbieta Janusauskaite
Job: Literary Luminary
Book: The Chocolate War
Pages: 263/263

1.
Quote: "Archie disliked violence;  most of his assignment were exercises in the psychological rather than the physical. That's why he got away with so much. The Trinity brothers wanted peace at any price, quiet on the campus, no broken bones. Otherwise, the sky was the limit.
Explanation: In the following paragraph we gain insight about how both the Vigils and the faulty of Trinity work. Archie, believes that getting to a persons mind is the way to really hurt them, rather than beating them up. All that the brothers want is a calm and peaceful environment though if something goes against their plans or expectations they are willing to act on it, whichever way they will. This paragraph also foreshadows what Brother Leon will do at the end of the book.
2.
Quote: "My name is Jerry Renoults and I'm not going to sell the chocolates." He said to the empty apartment. The word and his voice sounded strong and noble.
Explanation: After an unsuccessful phone call with the girl that he had seen on the bus station, he realizes that it did not matter whether she refused him, it was the fact that he had the guts to call her. He soon realizes that he is practically doing the same thing with the chocolate sale. Even though refusing to sell the chocolates is not resulting in a positive development, he is standing up for what he believes and rebelling, showing others that they don't have to follow the Vigils of Brother Leon. Even though the "rebellion" started with a Vigil assignment it developed into more.
3. Quote: You see Carter, people are two things: greedy and cruel. So we have a perfect set up here. the greedy part- a kid pays a buck for a wining a hundred, plus fifty boxes of chocolates. The cruel part- watching 2 guy hit each other, maybe hurting each other, while they r safe in the bleachers.  That's why it works Carter, because we're all bastards."
Explanation: Archie talks about how he knows the raffle will be a success. We learn more about Archie himself and gain yet another reason why hes against physical tormenting the students of Trinity. This also shows how most people are more like Archie, greedy and cruel, rather than like the Goober or Jerry.
4.
Quote: "The tell you to do your own thing, but they don't mean it. They don't want you to do your own thing, not unless it happens to be their thing too. It's a laugh Goober, a fake. Don't disturb the universe, Goober, no matter what the poster says."
Explanation: Jerry finally hits the downfall in the book, he is only truly beaten when he takes everything in. He gives up the refuge and grasps the idea of Archie being unbeatable. Fighting against people like him, is a loss of effort and time, because even though you might not realize that at the begging, your bound to understand that Archie Costello don't go down. By the end of the book, Jerry accepts the Vigils victory.
5.
Quote: "Maybe the black-box will work next time, Archie... Or maybe another kid like Renault will come along."
Explanation: Obie tells Archie, that his luck is about to run out. And that, he is bound to be defeated eventually. Ironically (as it is the end of the book), Archie and Obie are sitting in the same bleachers, as in the beginning of the book. Thinking and debating about the future and past,

2nd Rotation - Kresten Due - Discussion Director

This rotation we finished the book, "The Chocolate War" by Robert Cormier by reading the 263 pages of the book. This rotation I was the Discussion Director meaning I had to create questions based on the book and encourage discussion concerning those questions. This week there were various questions I posed mainly focused on characters and the book itself.

*Note these are not exact dialogues but summaries of points made by people*

Question #1:What are your feelings concerning Archie:

General Answer: He is a very rude and selfish person, and only cares for himself however at the same time he is very smart.

Kresten: I find him very interesting. I like his common application of psychology, how he is always composed. I also admire his intelligence and his knowledge of how humans react.

Elzbieta: He is very rude and selfish, and only cares for himself. However it is good how he prefers to hurt people mentally rather than physical, nonetheless he causes more pain than expected.

Luka: In general he is very selfish and rude.

Rodion: He is selfish, rude, and only cares for himself with no regard to other people.

Eplanaiton: Archie is the essential leader of the vigils who plays a large role in the story. He doesn't have goo grades but has a strong sense of people and uses that to his advantage whether it be to bait them or control them.

Question #2: What would you change about the book?

General Answer: There are far too many characters, and it needs more details. It is also very confusing

Kresten: I would decrease the amount of characters. For example Casper Tubs was introduced for part of a chapter and served no purpose. He contributed nothing and was redundant.

Elzbieta: There are far too many people and many of them are useless. It would be nice if a few were removed.

Luka: Less characters, and the book in general is lacking in many points which could be improved.

Rodion: It's too confusing and there are far too many characters. Also the book could have far more details

Explanation: Throughout the book there are many characters that come up and do absolutely nothing. For example the example of Casper Tubs represents this very well. For a fraction of a chapter Casper Tubs was introduced. He was described and then didn't come up ever again in the book.

Question #3: If you were to write an epilogue how would it go?

General Answer: Another internal conflict would occur with the characters.

Kresten: Jerry Renault, and The Goober would rejoin the football team and then I would do something similar to the outsiders were the last sentence would be the same as the first, leaving the ending open.

Elzbieta: There would be a civil war inside the Vigils, and Emila Janza would gain revenge on Archie Costello, and Archie Costello would try to evict Brother Leon as he was a threat to Archie

Luka: It is a very odd ending and it is difficult to come up with an end however there might be a war between various possible individuals.

Rodion: It was a very sudden stop, and is difficult to continue however I think there would be an internal war, and various things might change due to various accidents or similar things.

Explanation: In the book the normal completely changes as one student says no to a chocolate sale. This appears to make people realize hoe simple it is to say no which seems to change everyone. Nothing is normal and people appear to be resisting various things such as the school society the Vigils and the Chocolate sale.

Question #4: What would you do if you were in Trinity High school?

General Answer: We would try to be as incognito as possible and not be noticed by people.

Kresten: I would try to be incognito and do everything I was told to. In relation to the book, I dare not disturb the universe.

Elzbieta: I would try to be a ghost, be invisible, and be unpopular. I would hide from society and try to avoid the vigils however I wouldn't mind doing an assignment.

Luka: I would try to be incognito and sot of hide away from people

Rodion: I wouldn't want to be seen. Once again I would want to be incognito, or sort of invisible.

Explanation: At trinity there is a huge internal conflict as Jerry Renault refuses to sell chocolates and denies the vigils (The unofficial kings of the school) and everything appears to be going badly.

Question #5: Who was your favorite character while reading the book?

General Answer: The Majority picked Jerry Renault.

Kresten: My favorite character was Archie Costello as h is shown as a genius and has a very strong control of psychology, and is always composed. Two things which I envy. Also he has a very interesting philosophical concept of an invisible house which I don't fully understand but I find interesting.

Elzbieta: The Goober as he helps out the main character with his experience and acts how I would act in that situation.

Luka: I have mixed feelings however I like Jerry Renault the most. It is really only because there are no real better characters.

Rodion: I like Jerry Renault mainly because he shows defiance and is his own entity. People can't tell him so much what to do.

Explanation: N/A

2nd rotation Bing connector

For the second rotation in our literature circles I was the connector. For this job I first summarized the story and then tried to find a connection with it in real life.

I read from chapter 14 to chapter 28 and it is about Jerry refusing to sell chocolates at his school. This also motivates others to refuse and that gives the vigils, a school society which organize the chocolate selling's problems. However Jerry doesn't exactly know why he is refusing to sell chocolates.
I have this too sometimes that I do something without knowing why. Like ones I just kept on singing the Star Wars soundtrack for no good reason, or I once started cutting up a science project because I was angry. However it just ended up being the baddest idea ever.

Rotation 2- The Chocolate War

Till chapter 28

In this rotation i was the illustrator and i drew a phone call saying that the boys in the call are on the same page as this kid named Jerry Renault saying he was completely right and they are also sick of just selling chocolates.
